Other Names:Rubyfish (Australia), Rock Salmon (South Africa).
Family:Emmelichthyidae (bonnetmouths)
Description:The average length is 20 – 30 cm, and the average weight is 0.8 – 1.8 kg, although examples up to 3kg have been found. Deep ruby-red body, often with brownish or orange tinge. Large eyes and mouth. Tail markedly forked.
Main Season:Landed all year round.
Resource:Found in the Southern Oceans from South Africa to Australasia. Caught mainly by trawling. A moderate resource.
Characteristics:White moist flesh with delicate texture. Low fat content. Flakes easily.
