Other Names: Binnaga, Bincho (Japan), Germon (France), Weisser Thunfisch (Germany), Tonno bianco, Alalonga (Italy), Atun blanco, Albacora (Spain), Tunny (all tunas ) (UK).
Family: Scombridae (tunas and mackerels)
Description: The average size is 55 - 65 cm, weighing 3.5 - 5.5 kg. Blackish-blue above, lower sides and belly silvery grey. Long pectoral fin.
Main Season: Main summer grounds December - May.
Resource: Abundant. A large resource. Cosmopolitan in tropical and subtropical seas often extending into cool waters. Migratory, pelagic.
Characteristics: Flesh pinkish and medium firm, lightens when cooked. Lighter coloured and softer than the large tunas. Medium fat and medium moisture content. Important international canning species and usually processed in this way. Roe is salted and coloured to make caviar substitute.
