Other Names: Kinmedai, Kinme (Japan), Sudlicher Kaiserbarsch (Germany).
Family: Berycidae (alfonsinos)
Description: The average length is 30 - 50 cm, the average weight is 1 - 1.5 kg. Brilliant scarlet above, sides red with silver tinge. Large scales, large eye, tail deeply forked. Body more slender and smoother than the related red snapper that has rough scales with coarse spines on their margins.
Main Season: Catch is moderate all year round.
Resource: Widespread in many oceans. Managed under the NZ Quota Management System. Alfonsino is widely dispersed around New Zealand at depths of 200 - 800m but is common only in some locations and is nowhere abundant. Caught mainly by trawling. Resource size undetermined but possibly moderate. The related long-finned beryx is widely dispersed but uncommon in New Zealand seas. Red snapper is more common in northern New Zealand, 200 - 400m, but comprise only a small commercial resource.
Characteristics: White flesh, firm texture. Suits most methods of cooking.
