Common Name: Brill
Scientific Name: Colistium guntheri
Other Names: Plie-Barbue (France), Glattbutt (Germany), Rombol liscio (Italy), Remol (Spain).
Family: Pleuronectidae (righteye flounders)
Description: The average length is 25 - 40 cm, some up to about 90 cm. The average weight is 1.8kg. New Zealand only. Brownish grey with fine longitudinal black lines. Shape oval, with short rostral hook on upper jaw.
Main Season: Caught all year round in small quantities.
Resource: Most common in the south where it is caught in depths down to 100m as a by-catch from trawling. A very small resource, seldom available for export.
Characteristics: Flesh similar to turbot. Apricot coloured or white, whitens on cooking. Delicate texture and flavour.
