Common Name: Hake
Scientific Name: Merluccius australis
Other Names: Meru (Japan), Merlu austral (France), Seehecht (Germany), Nasello, Merluzzo (Italy), Merluza (large), Pescadilla (small) (Spain).
Family: Merlucciidae (hakes)
Description: The average length is 70-100 cm, the average weight is 4kg. Silvery grey above, white below, small scales.
Main Season:  
Resource: Restricted to New Zealand but similar species elsewhere, including South Africa and South America. Occurs around the South Island in 200-800 m. Caught by trawling. Main grounds off Westland in winter. A moderate resource.
Characteristics: Flesh moist and white with few bones. Delicate texture.
