Other Names: Horse Mackerel (NZ), Jack Mackerel, Horse Mackerel, Scad, Cowanyoung (Australia), Ma-aji (Japan), Chinchard neozelandais (France), Holzmakrele, Stocker (Germany), Savridi (Greece), Suro, Sgombro bastardo (Italy), Jurel (Spain), Stavrida (Russia).

Description: Average length: Trachurus declivis 35 – 50 cm; Trachurus novaezelandiae 30 – 40 cm. Average weight 850 gm. Blue, or green with faint brown bands above, silvery white below; small scales, and a row of rough scutes along the body.
Main Season: Available all year round.
Resource: Both species, which are superficially similar, occur around New Zealand and southern Australia; Trachurus novaezelandiae also in South East Asia and Japan. Trachurus declivis is the more abundant species and is caught by trawl. Trachurus novaezelandiae is caught by purse seine. A large resource of each species.
Characteristics: Flesh dark, lightens when cooked. Medium to high fat content that varies seasonally, being highest in March – April. On average the fat content is not as high as for equivalent species in the northern hemisphere. Suitable for canning and smoking.
