Family: Zeidae (dories)
Description: The average length is 30 – 40 cm, and the average weight is 1.2 – 1.5 kg. Olive-brown with a golden sheen, and a dark spot on the centre of each side.
Main Season: Landings are fairly constant throughout the year.
Resource: A widespread species which occurs in the eastern Atlantic Ocean (Norway to South Africa), Mediterranean Sea, New Zealand, Australia and Japan. Quite common in the coastal water of northern New Zealand, but not abundant in any locality. Does not school. Caught in mixed species trawl catches where the main species sought are snapper and tarakihi. Some are also caught by Danish seiners. A small resource.
Characteristics: Premium table fish with firm, white flesh. Suited to all basic cooking methods. The fillets can be boned easily.
