Ling (Genypterus blacodes)

Common Name: Ling
Scientific Name: Genypterus blacodes
Other Names: Ling (Australia), Kingu (Japan), Kingklip (South Africa). In the Northern Hemisphere the common name ling refers to certain members of the family Gadidae (cods) that are superficially similar to the New Zealand ling. The following names are used in Europe
Family: Ophidiidae (cusk eel)
Description: The average length is 80 - 120 cm, the average weight range 5 - 20 kg. Robust and eel shaped becoming relatively thicker with increasing age. Orange - pink and brown above, with irregular markings, palter to white below. Skin smooth.
Main Season: Caught mainly by longline, also by trawl.
Resource: A large resource.
Characteristics: Flesh very white and firm; holds its shape well in cooking. Makes good smoked product. Small fish are used in sashimi dishes in Japan.
