Scientific Name: Raja spp
Other Names: Skate (New Zealand), Suei (Japan), Raie de Nouvelle Zelande (France), Rochen (Germany), Razza (Italy), Raya (Spain).
Family: Rajidae (skates)
Description: Rough Skate ( Male ); Smooth Skate ( Female ). The average size is 45-80cm, reaching 100cm; smooth skate 60-100cm, reaching 160cm. Rough skate has rough skin, and a relatively broad tail, usually with three rows of conical spines. Smooth skate has smooth skin( except in large specimens) and a thin tail with one to three rows of spines.
Main Season: Caught all year round usually as a by-catch.
Resource: Small resource.
Characteristics: When cooked very moist, delicate white flesh; good flavour.
