Common Name: Skipjack Tuna
Scientific Name: Katsuwonus pelamis
Other Names: Skipjack, Striped Tuna (Australia), Katsuo (Japan), Fonite a ventre raye, Listao (France), Echter Bonito (Germany), Tonnetto striato (Italy), Listado (Spain), Tunny (all tunas) (UK).
Family: Scombridae (tunas and mackerels)
Description: The average size is 45 – 55 cm weighing 1.8 – 2.8 kg. Migratory, pelagic. Dark purplish-blue above, lower sides and belly silvery-white, with four to six conspicuous, longitudinal, dark stripes.
Main Season: Season November to June with peak landings January – March.
Resource: Caught mainly by purse seine. Abundant. A large resource.
Characteristics: Flesh dark red, high fat, low moisture, medium texture. Traditionally used for canned product. Liver oil especially rich in vitamin D.
