Average length 30-60cm. Average weight 0.5 to 4kg. However, exceptional specimens of 10kg or more are occasionally caught. Golden pink to reddish above, with numerous blue spots on the upper sides, paler to white below. Strong teeth; moderate firm scales. | | Main Season: | Landed throughout the year with main season from October to April. Caught mainly by trawling, Danish seining and longlining, some by net setting. | | Resource: | Snapper are found in New Zealand’s warmer coastal waters - particularly in the northern North Island and Bay of Plenty regions. This fish is mainly taken by bottom long line or trawling, generally from depths of 10-100 metres. New Zealand's snapper fishery is managed by strict quotas, which allow only a set amount of snapper to be taken commercially each year. | | Characteristics: | Snapper has a tender white to pinkish flesh with a sweet, mild flavour.
