Common Name: Southern Blue Whiting
Scientific Name: Micromesistius australis
Other Names: Minami-dara (Japan), Merlan bleu austral (France), Blauer Wittling (Germany), Merlu (Italy), Bacaladilla (Spain), Poutassou (Russia).
Family: Gadidae (cods)
Description: The average length is about 40 cm weight 400 gm. Grey, faintly bluish above, with many small black spots, silver-white below; three dorsal and two anal fins; small, loose scales.
Main Season: Main catching season during the spawning season, August to early October.
Resource: Caught by trawling. A very large resource.
Characteristics: Flesh white, delicate texture, moist with low fat, and flakes easily. Similar flesh to hoki.
