Other Names: In the northern Hemisphere the common name turbot refers to certain members of the family Bothidae which are similar to the New Zealand turbot. In Europe: Plie-turbot (France), Steinbutt (Germany), Rombo chiodat (Italy), Rodaballo (Spain),
Family: Pleuronectidae (righteye flounders)
Description: The average size is 25-45cm, some grow to about 90cm and average weight approximately 1-1.5kg. Brownish with irregular dark blotches. Shape oval with long rostral hook on upper jaw.
Main Season: Caught mainly as a by-catch in New Zealand.
Resource: Small resource.
Characteristics: Flesh apricot coloured, whitens on cooking. Delicate texture and flavour.
